Set in the Karoo Midlands, the Baviaans is a paradise of contrasts. Towering mountains cradle the area and provides for contemplative moments and inspiration for anyone with a creative soul. From the quaint Karoo towns of Steytlerville and Willowmore to the lush crags of the Baviaanskloof, this is an area rich in dreams and possibilities. Being only two hours drive form Port Elizabeth and George, the area makes for a perfect escape in a world where the petrol price deters us from making the best of our free time. So have you booked your trip yet?

Steytlerville lies at the entrance to the eastern parts of the Baviaanskloof and showcases a host of architectural gems like quaint Edwardian- and Victorian-era houses with tin roofs and large street-facing verandas complete with broekie lace and stained glass windows. One of the best towns the Karoo has to offer, Steytlerville with its bougainvillea-lined streets and horse-drawn carts is a diamond waiting to be discovered. It comes as no surprise then that the town is home to several South African personalities, as a holiday in this town easily leads to relocation.

For a unique and breathtaking 4X4 experience, the Baviaanskloof offers deep valleys, offset against towering peaks, lush riverine forestry against dry Karoo tumble-weeds and even snow-white beaches alongside clear, bronze waters.
Known for its vast, dry landscapes the Karoo surprises with this “green belt” and many a scene in the Kloof might seem more like the Scottish highlands than the Karoo.
This wonderland is an ever changing selection of scenery and vegetation types ranging from fynbos to lush riverine forest. It is also populated by a wide selection of animals from the seldom seen leopards and buffalos, through various antelope species to the ever-present baboons and tortoises.
For the nature enthusiast the Kloof offers fauna and flora seldom matched anywhere else in the world. An over night stay in the Kloof is a must with accommodation options ranging from tree houses, to caves to quaint guesthouses.

At the western entrance to the Baviaanskloof is Willowmore. A town steeped in history, Willowmore lends itself to cosy weekends spent next to the fire relating folklore and recalling stories of a bygone era. As architecturally precious as its surrounding towns, Willowmore is a prime spot to end your journey through the Kloof with warm Karoo hospitality. Boasting a host of interesting nooks and crannies, the town offers weary travellers a place to rejuvenate both body and soul.
