This is where the sun spends the winter.
Kenton on Sea is situated between 2 tidal rivers - the Kariega and Bushmans Rivers. It has an unspoilt beachfront as a Nature Reserve borders the beach and covers the sanddunes that line the magnificent pristine beach between these rivers. The main beach next to Kariega River was voted best beach in South Africa in 2001. Small buck and other wild game live in this reserve and are spotted regularly. Because of this ideal situation, Kenton is also a birder’s paradise with the sea, rivers and nature reserve in close proximity.
Fishing is excellent - deep sea, surf, rock and river. Whales are spotted regularly from April to December and often calve at the mouth of these rivers, from August before returning to the Antarctic from our Indian Ocean coastline. Spectacular viewing of dolphins occur all year round and visitors have swum amongst them just beyond the waves. Kenton has a temperate climate and lies on the edge of both the summer and winter rainfall areas.
It is within easy reach of the many game reserves in the area. The Kariega and Emlanjeni Reserves are only 15 minutes from here and Shamwari, Kwandwe, Amakhala, Schotia and the Addo Elephant Park are only 1 to 1 1/2 hours drive from here in this ecologically diverse part of the Eastern Cape which is also malaria free.
There are numerous trails nearby such as horse trails through indigenous bush onto the beach, hiking trails (some through pineapple farms), canoe trails, as well as mountain biking, 4 x 4 inland to mention some.
Other activities for those who love the outdoors and adventure, are sandboarding on our
dunes, snorkelling, skiing and boating. Canoes and boats are for hire at our small marina. Other
sporting facilities include bowls, squash, tennis, a gym, deep sea diving in some of South Africa’s
most spectacular reefs 15 minutes away with many rock pools and quiet waters to snorkel. This
area is a melting pot of history - Koisan middens, rich Xhosa heritage and cultural experiences,
including tours to adjacent townships for a real experience of everyday life and hospitality.
Explore Portugese history (the Diaz Cross nearby), the numerous shipwrecks, Voortrekker historical sites, the 1820 Settler country and German settlements a short distance up the coast towards East London.
Grahamstown is 40 minutes inland with all its history, culture - the National Arts
Festival is held here at the end of June into the first week of July every year - as well as many
other festivals throughout the year. Many well known artists and crafters have settled here
providing another attraction for visitors. Accommodation to suit every budget is plentiful in
