From Garrison Town to Bustling Metropole A charming town that has recently been incorporated
into the Buffalo City Metropole, King William’s Town, on the upper reaches of the Buffalo River,
is a fascinating mixture of history, culture and landscape.
Cultural history is preserved in the town’s museums, monuments and many sandstone buildings - including the Steve Biko Garden of Remembrance, the Bisho Massacre Monument, the Amathole Museum (a Xhosa gallery, German settlers, military local history and mammal displays) and a Missionary Museum.
For adventure, there are the 2 day Kologha Hiking Trail, the 2 day Pirie Section of the Amatola Hiking Trail (in total, the Amatola Trail covers 105km over 5 days), as well as shorter walks and trout and bass fishing at the Maden and Rooikrantz dams, water sports, go-cart racing, bowls, soccer, rugby, cricket, hockey, squash and tennis. An annual highlight is the Dale-Selbourne Rugby and Hockey Challenge - played in May. ‘
King’ (as it’s affectionately known), lies within a short drive of the many malaria free game reserves of the Eastern Cape.
